US Classification:
524570, 526279
Abstract:
The invention relates compositions containing at least one silane-grafted polyolefin, and in particular, to compositions containing at least one silane-grafted ethylene/α-olefin polymer, which has a melt viscosity less than 50,000 cP, and adhesives containing the same. In one embodiment, the at least one silane-grafted ethylene/α-olefin polymer is formed from an ethylene/α-olefin polymer that has a molecular weight distribution from 1 to 3.5. The invention also relates to the preparation of the silane-grafted polymers, by reacting, for example, an ethylene/α-olefin polymer with at least one silane compound and at least one initiator.

Crosslinked Automotive Wire Having Improved Surface Smoothness

US Patent:
2008023, Sep 25, 2008
Filed:
Apr 1, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/060635
Inventors:
Thomas S. Lin - Whippany NJ, US
Kurt A. Bolz - Allentown NJ, US
Jeffrey M. Cogen - Flemington NJ, US
Neil W. Dunchus - Kinnelon NJ, US
Benjamin R. Rozenblat - Belle Mead NJ, US
Assignee:
Dow Global Technologies Inc. - Midland MI
International Classification:
H01B 7/18
US Classification:
174102 R
Abstract:
The present invention is a crosslinked automotive wire comprising a metal conductor, a flame retardant insulation layer surrounding the metal conductor, and optionally, a wire jacket surrounding the insulation layer. The automotive wire passes the specifications of one or more several automotive cable testing protocols: (a) SAE J-1128, (b) ISO-6722, (c) LV 112, (d) Chrysler MS-8288, and (e) Renault 36-36-05-009/-L. In particular, the flame retardant insulation layer is prepared from a crosslinkable thermoplastic polymer and a metal carbonate. The flame retardant composition for making the insulation layer demonstrates economic and processing improvements over conventional solutions. The present invention is also a method for preparing a low tension primary automotive wire and the automotive wire made therefrom.

Abstract:
This invention is directed to optical cable components fabricated from an extrudable blend of high crystalline polypropylene and an impact modifying polymer to provide an enhanced balance flexural modulus, Izod notched value, grease resistance, and low shrinkage properties. The polypropylene has a crystallinity of greater than weight percent and a melt flow of from 1 to 20 grams per 10 minutes at 230 degrees C. At 23 degrees C., the composition yields an extrudant having a 1-percent secant modulus of at least 1,600 MPa and a notched Izod of at least 35 J/m. The composition also yields an extruded tube having a shrinkage of less than 2.0 percent after 24 hours at 100 degrees C.
