My commitment is to you, the patient, not to an insurance company, the Government, or a third party. I can only control my practice; third parties have their own rules and regulations into which I have no input, and no control. As a physician I am dedicated to my patients, to whom I swear, above all else, to do no harm. This includes confidentiality. My training is in medicine and psychiatry; not in how to deal with insurance or bureaucracies. If you involve a third party they have access to your medical record, and often influence your treatment. These agencies strive to pay as little as possible and always look to cut corners. The best way to do this is to review the chart. They claim to maintain confidentiality. But, unlike physicians, they are not obligated by the Hippocratic Oath, professional standards, or to you. Therefore, I do not allow third parties to intrude into my practice, and with very rare legal exceptions, I release patient records exclusively to the patient alone.
