Apparatus For Placing Plies On Curved Substrates

US Patent:
2011019, Aug 11, 2011
Filed:
Apr 21, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/091503
Inventors:
Robert L. Anderson - Tacoma WA, US
Charles M. Richards - Kent WA, US
Barry P. VanWest - Bellevue WA, US
Jeffrey M. Hansen - Renton WA, US
Assignee:
THE BOEING COMPANY - Chicago IL
International Classification:
B32B 37/10
US Classification:
156349
Abstract:
A ply placement device uses a ply guide to place plies on a curved substrate surface. The ply guide includes a guide surface and a guide edge that are each curved to match the contour of the substrate so that the ply transitions smoothly from its planar form to a curved form as the ply is placed onto the substrate. The ply guide may be flexible or segmented to allow reconfiguration of the guide surfaces to match various substrate contours.

Foam Stiffened Hollow Composite Stringer

US Patent:
2009012, May 21, 2009
Filed:
Nov 8, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/937006
Inventors:
Juan C. Guzman - Seattle WA, US
Douglas A. McCarville - Orting WA, US
Daniel M. Rotter - Lake Forest Park WA, US
Barry P. VanWest - Bellevue WA, US
International Classification:
B64C 1/00, B29C 67/20
US Classification:
244133, 264 464, 264 451
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for a composite stringer. A method is used for manufacturing a hollow composite stringer. Foam is formed with a mandrel installed into the foam. A composite material and the foam is laid up onto a tool in a form of a stringer. The composite material and the foam in the form of the stringer is cured to form a cured stringer. The mandrel from the foam is removed to form the hollow composite stringer.

Cellular Composite Grid-Stiffened Structure

US Patent:
2006017, Aug 3, 2006
Filed:
Feb 1, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/048177
Inventors:
Shin Lee - Bellevue WA, US
Barry VanWest - Bellevue WA, US
International Classification:
B32B 3/12
US Classification:
428178000
Abstract:
A cellular composite structure includes a grid having groups of angularly intersecting ribs. The ribs of each group are oriented substantially in the same direction to each other and angularly oriented from the other rib groups. An additional rib defines a composite structure outer perimeter wall and can be differently angularly oriented from the other ribs. A contiguous rib wall is created by segments of ribs defined by rib intersections. The contiguous rib wall bounds a cavity. A multilayer sheet cap member with extending walls to engage the contiguous rib wall is positioned within the cavity. The engagement walls extend from individual sheet perimeter portions angularly oriented to the sheet. The ribs and cap member have pre-impregnated resin. Heating the cap member and ribs activates the resin and co-cures the composite structure.
