US Classification:
175 5, 166358, 175135, 175293, 405249
Abstract:
A method for driving a drive pipe into a subsea formation, the method being comprised of the following steps: suspending the drive pipe from a drill string; moving at least one mass in a direction having an upward component and within the drive pipe; accelerating at least one mass relative to the drive pipe, wherein the at least one mass is accelerated within the drive pipe; transferring energy from the accelerated at least one mass to the drive pipe; isolating the drill string from energy from the accelerated at least one mass; and removing a core of formation from within the drive pipe after the transferring. A system for driving a drive pipe into a subsea formation, the system having: a drill string suspendable from a marine vessel; a running tool attachable to the drill string, wherein a top of the drive pipe is connected to the running tool; at least one mass adapted to fit within the drive pipe; an accelerator of the at least one mass, wherein the accelerator is in mechanical communication with the running tool and the at least one mass; and a transferror of energy from the at least one mass to the drive pipe, wherein the transferror transfers energy after the at least one mass is accelerated by the accelerator.

Electro-Mechanical Drilling Jar

US Patent:
6729419, May 4, 2004
Filed:
May 30, 2000
Appl. No.:
09/580102
Inventors:
Arley Gene Lee - Katy TX
Assignee:
Smith International, Inc. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 414
US Classification:
175297, 175298
Abstract:
A drilling jar comprising a mandrel with a shoulder extending radially outward. The shoulder defines at least one openable and closeable orifice therethrough. An outer housing is slidably disposed about the mandrel to define an upper chamber above the shoulder and a lower chamber below the shoulder. The jar also comprises a magnetorestriction material that responds to a predetermined pressure in the upper chamber to open at least one orifice in the shoulder to allow rapid pressure communication between the upper and lower chambers.

Filed:
Jun 25, 2002
Appl. No.:
10/179123
Inventors:
Arley Gene Lee - Katy TX, US
International Classification:
F16L055/04
US Classification:
138 31, 175135
Abstract:
A pulsation dampener apparatus and method for dampening pulses within a fluid flow line during well drilling operations. The pulsation dampener apparatus comprises a cylindrical body having an annular chamber, a piston slidably disposed within the annular chamber, a gas column within the annular chamber and a means of communicating pulses from the fluid flow line to the piston. The piston is operated against the gas column to dampen the pulses within the fluid flow line.

Increased Energy Impact Tool

US Patent:
2011020, Sep 1, 2011
Filed:
Mar 1, 2011
Appl. No.:
13/037653
Inventors:
Vishal Saheta - Houston TX, US
Arley G. Lee - Katy TX, US
Assignee:
SMITH INTERNATIONAL, INC. - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 49/00, E21B 7/00
US Classification:
175 50, 175 57
Abstract:
A downhole jarring tool includes a mandrel having a small diameter portion and a large diameter portion, a detent cylinder sealingly disposed around the mandrel forming an enclosure, a divider disposed in the enclosure between the mandrel and the detent cylinder, wherein the divider partitions the enclosure into a storage chamber and a metering chamber, and a metering system disposed around the mandrel. A method of applying an impact force using a downhole jarring tool includes moving a mandrel with respect to a detent cylinder by applying an axial force, positioning the mandrel such that a metering system disposed on the mandrel enters a reduced diameter portion of the detent cylinder, transmitting energy to an energy storing component disposed inside the detent cylinder, metering a fluid through the metering system, and accelerating the mandrel with respect to the detent cylinder.
