My care philosophy is largely based on my upbringing and personal events that shaped me to be a doctor. My father, who was a physician that cared for critically ill new borns, died suddenly at age 47 due to complications from a heart attack. I was 23, my brother was 3 and sister was 16. It devastated my family. I spent many summers shadowing him, watching how wonderful he was with his patients and the whole family. I knew that I was going to be a doctor. On my first day of cardiology training, while learning how to perform echocardiograms, i found out that I was walking around with a hole in my heart, called an atrial septal defect, that needed to be closed or i would develop heart failure or arrhythmias. The decision on how and when to close the hole was complex; without honest and caring doctors i might have made the wrong choice. It is these two experiences and being raised by caring, hardworking, dedicated, altruistic people that i approach every patient as if he/she are family.
