Bag Clamping Arrangement

US Patent:
4592582, Jun 3, 1986
Filed:
Dec 20, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/684020
Inventors:
Ardis R. Lavender - Chappaqua NY
George Vrany - Bedford Hills NY
Assignee:
USV Pharmaceutical Corporation - Tuckahoe NY
International Classification:
A61M 100, B04B 500, B65D 3112
US Classification:
294137
Abstract:
A bag clamping arrangement, such as an arrangement for automatically controlling the filling volume and overflow of a liquid conducted into a flexible bag which is clamped in the arrangement. The bag clamping arrangement is essentially constituted of a rigid upwardly open receptacle of substantially rectangular or a relatively large upper compartment, and wherein a narrow compartment which in open communication with the upper compartment depends downwardly from the bottom of the upper compartment so as to extend longitudinally and generally centrally across the full width of the receptacle. The lower compartment includes opposite parallel sidewalls which are down so as to form a reducing compartment width therebetween. Towards the lower end of the compartment is a plate-like clamping arrangement essentially constituted of a flat plate member which may be manually engaged through an elongate slot and gripping portion proximate its upper horizontal edge. The plate member is provided along its lower edge on both sides thereof with sideways projecting resilient clamping components which, upon being inserted into the lower compartment of the receptacle, are biased towards the plate member and are dimensioned to clampingly engage between the sides of the clamping plate and the contiguous sidewalls of the lower compartment.

System And Method For Mass Transfer Between Fluids

US Patent:
4980054, Dec 25, 1990
Filed:
Dec 30, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/139647
Inventors:
Ardis R. Lavender - Chappaqua NY
International Classification:
B01D 6118
US Classification:
210 90
Abstract:
A system, method and device for continuous mass transfer in fluids, such as blond. A mass transfer device is connected in a closed path between a blood source and a reservoir. Pumps and valves are provided to move the blood through the mass transfer device sequentially in a first path from the blood source to the reservoir and in a second pass from the reservoir to the blood source. Material may be added to the blood flowing from the source. The mass transfer device may be a fractionating device, In that case the system and method may be used for plasma collection, or for displacement of water preparatory to freezing of the blood, or for the formation of washed blood cells from either whole blood or thawed blood. The system and method may be used for hemodialysis, in which case the mass transfer device is a dialyzer. The fractionating device includes interleaved blood plates and blood fraction collection plates separated by semipermeable membranes.

System And Method For Continuously Fractionating Blood In Situ

US Patent:
4898675, Feb 6, 1990
Filed:
Dec 16, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/809923
Inventors:
Ardis R. Lavender - Chappaqua NY
International Classification:
B01D 1300
US Classification:
210651
Abstract:
A system, method and device for continuously fractionating blood in situ. The fractionating device is connected in a closed loop to the donor and includes interleaved blood plates and blood fraction plates separated by a semipermeable membrane. Grooves in the plates direct blood flow and blood fraction collection. Uniform distribution among the plates and intraplate is obtained by manifolds. The input and output pressures of the blood pump are sensed and inputed to an microprocessor, into which donor data including weight, sex, and hematocrit is also keyed by the user. The microprocessor operates under program control to calculate, based on the donor data, the amount of plasma to be collected and the amount of anticoagulant to be added. The program controls the operation of the extracorporeal devices, regulates the operating parameters, and stops the procedure when the predetermined amount of plasma has been obtained.

Peristaltic Roller Pump

US Patent:
4568255, Feb 4, 1986
Filed:
Nov 16, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/672571
Inventors:
Ardis Lavender - Chappaqua NY
Emidio Di Martino - Bronx NY
Assignee:
Armour Pharmaceutical - Tarrytown NY
International Classification:
F04B 4312
US Classification:
417477
Abstract:
The Specification discloses an improved peristaltic Roller Pump for pumping fluids through a flexible tubing. First and second surge release radii are formed on a semicylindrical reaction wall to minimize back surge or fluctuations in pump line pressure as the pump rollers engage and disengage the reaction wall. Improved sloped or angles sweep vanes are provided in front of each roller for collecting the tubing and directing it through a discharge throat into the path of the oncoming roller thereby minimize jamming, kinking or other entanglement of small diameter tubing when used in a roller pump. A novel and inexpensive construction arrangement provides for quick simple and precise adjustment of both rollers simultaneously to enable the operator to quickly adjust the pump, or to disassemble the pump for cleaning or sterilization. The pump utilizes a pair of reciprocating pump arms which are actuated by a single cam means to provide for a simultaneous and identical adjustment of each of the rollers with respect to the pump wall.

Freezing Frame For A Plasma Container

US Patent:
4565073, Jan 21, 1986
Filed:
Feb 7, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/699035
Inventors:
Ardis Lavender - Chappaqua NY
Assignee:
Armour Pharmaceutical Co. - Tarrytown NY
International Classification:
F25D 1702
US Classification:
62373
Abstract:
The Specification discloses a parallel-piped freezing frame having a plurality of compartments for freezing of flexible bags of plasma or other biological fluid. A slidable freezing plate is mounted within each compartment and cam means are provided for directing the freezing plate downwardly and laterally against a side wall of the component. The freezing plate and associated planar wall thereby mold the flexible bag into a flat but slightly wedge-shaped configuration. A freezing medium such as alcohol circulates through the freezing frame to freeze the contents of the flexible bag.
