Abstract:
Polyquaternary polymeric flocculants, containing a substantially reduced total residual amount of epihalohydrin and 1,3-dihalo-2-propanol and less than about 1000 ppm of dialkylamine, are produced by reacting a polyquaternary polymer prepared from epihalohydrin, dialkylamine, and optionally a polyfunctional amine with a compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R. sub. 1, R. sub. 2, R. sub. 3 and R. sub. 4 are alkyl (C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 3), and R. sub. 5 is hydrogen or hydroxyl.

Water-dispersible but water-insoluble vinyl polymers composed of at least 40 mol percent of hydrophilic cationic linkages, at least 5 mol percent of hydrophobic linkages and up to 10 mol percent of hydrophilic anionic linkages are flocculating agents for the solids in industrial effluents (including raw and digested sewage). The polymers form stable dispersions in water, and are employed in that state.
