Internal Combustion Engine With Cooling Of Intake Air Using Refrigeration Of Liquefied Fuel Gas

US Patent:
5375580, Dec 27, 1994
Filed:
Sep 8, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/118542
Inventors:
Jack L. Stolz - Allentown PA
William P. Hegarty - State College PA
Anthony A. Cassano - Allentown PA
James G. Hansel - Emmaus PA
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
F02M 2104
US Classification:
123527
Abstract:
A turbocharged or supercharged internal combustion motive system for utilization of gaseous fuel stored as a liquid wherein the liquefied gaseous fuel is vaporized and warmed at least partially with heat removed from the compressed intake combustion air in the turbocharger or supercharger aftercooler. In a preferred embodiment, the compressed intake combustion air is first cooled in an aftercooler against an ambiently cooled coolant and is subsequently cooled in further aftercooler heat exchange passages against an intermediate coolant which transfers heat removed from the compressed intake combustion air to the liquefied gaseous fuel. Embodiments are disclosed wherein the saturated liquefied gaseous fuel is first subcooled and then pumped to pressures high enough for direct combustion chamber injection and another embodiment discloses vaporization of the saturated liquefied gaseous fuel with compression of the vaporized gas in a compression-type injection system or by low pressure carburetion into the internal combustion engine.

Air Separation With Temperature And Pressure Swing

US Patent:
4565685, Jan 21, 1986
Filed:
Sep 14, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/651181
Inventors:
Anthony A. Cassano - Allentown PA
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
C01B 1300
US Classification:
423579
Abstract:
A chemical absorbent air separation process is set forth which uses a temperature swing absorption-desorption cycle in combination with a pressure swing wherein the pressure is elevated in the desorption stage of the process.

Cascade Heat Recovery With Coproduct Gas Production

US Patent:
4617182, Oct 14, 1986
Filed:
Aug 26, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/769230
Inventors:
William R. Brown - Zionsville PA
Anthony A. Cassano - Allentown PA
Brian R. Dunbobbin - Allentown PA
Pradip Rao - Allentown PA
Donald C. Erickson - Annapolis MD
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
C01B 1304
US Classification:
423579
Abstract:
A process for the integration of a chemical absorption separation of oxygen and nitrogen from air with a combustion process is set forth wherein excess temperature availability from the combustion process is more effectively utilized to desorb oxygen product from the absorbent and then the sensible heat and absorption reaction heat is further utilized to produce a high temperature process stream. The oxygen may be utilized to enrich the combustion process wherein the high temperature heat for desorption is conducted in a heat exchange preferably performed with a pressure differential of less than 10 atmospheres which provides considerable flexibility in the heat exchange.

Oxygen Production By Molten Alkali Metal Salts Using Multiple Absorption-Desorption Cycles

US Patent:
4526775, Jul 2, 1985
Filed:
Feb 23, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/583090
Inventors:
Anthony A. Cassano - Allentown PA
Assignee:
Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. - Allentown PA
International Classification:
C01B 1300
US Classification:
423579
Abstract:
A continuous chemical air separation is performed wherein oxygen is recovered with a molten alkali metal salt oxygen acceptor in a series of absorption zones which are connected to a plurality of desorption zones operated in separate parallel cycles with the absorption zones. A greater recovery of high pressure oxygen is achieved at reduced power requirements and capital costs.
