Dr. Pearle has a deep interest in applying computer assisted surgical techniques to promote more accurate and minimally invasive surgery. He received an OREF Career Development Award to study computer assisted techniques in trauma, joint replacement, and sports medicine. With the support of this award, Dr. Pearle worked at institutions pioneering computer assisted surgery in Switzerland, France, Germany, and Israel. Dr. Pearle founded and is the Clinical Director of the HSS Computer Assisted Surgery (CAS) Center, established to coordinate the development and application of surgical navigation and medical robotics in orthopedic surgery. Dr. Pearle's clinical interests include arthroscopic and computer aided surgery of the shoulder, knee, and ankle.

Abstract:
A method for performing computer-assisted orthopaedic surgery includes the steps of: () producing and displaying three-dimensional geometrical models of first and second bones, the first and second bones forming a joint; () identifying a zone of impingement between the first bone and the second bone on at least one of the bones; and () generating and displaying a color map of at least one surface of at least one bone, the at least one surface being within the zone of impingement, the color map including different colors representing different depths of bone to be removed in order to achieve an increased range of motion between the first and second bones.
