Scanning Beam Control System With Translated Reference Scale

US Patent:
5191447, Mar 2, 1993
Filed:
Dec 7, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/626582
Inventors:
Alward I. Pinard - Westford MA
Assignee:
Intergraph Corporation - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H04N 104
US Classification:
358497
Abstract:
A scanning system, having a fixed platen and optical imaging system and a translated reference scale, is provided for scanning of a modulated light beam (or a set of parallel, independently modulated light beams) onto an object surface. The optical system provides a combined light beam including the modulated light beam and a reference light beam. An optical imaging device moves the combined light beam along a scan line, and a translatably mounted beam splitter splits the combined light beam to direct at least some of the reference light beam onto a reference scale and a sensor. The reference scale sensor, which is rigidly attached to the beam splitter, and is responsive to reference beam position in two directions, provides a clocking signal indicative of beam position along the scan line and a vernier position signal indicative of beam position in a direction transverse to the scan line. An optical stepper controls the translation of the beam splitter such as to position precisely each of a series of scans in a direction transverse to the scan lines.

Digital Proofing System

US Patent:
5579044, Nov 26, 1996
Filed:
Aug 20, 1993
Appl. No.:
8/110301
Inventors:
Andrew Warner - Harvard MA
Alward I. Pinard - Westford MA
Harold Thidemann - Belmont MA
Assignee:
Intergraph Corporation - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
B41J 247
US Classification:
347236
Abstract:
A system that permits the plotting of any combination of several colors in one pass. Three differently colored light sources are provided, and thus one, two or three colors may be plotted at the same time. An apparatus is provided for causing relative movement between the scanning head and the substrate along each of the two axes of the substrate. Preferably, the first axis is disposed circumferentially about a cylinder, on which the substrate is situated, the cylinder having a central axis, and the second axis is disposed approximately parallel to the central axis. The system includes deflection means, preferably acousto-optical modulators, for deflecting along a path a portion of each beam of light by an amount dependent upon the frequency of a signal that is present at the deflection means' input.

Apparatus And Method For Scanning By Means Of A Rotatable Detector Array

US Patent:
5280370, Jan 18, 1994
Filed:
Sep 5, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/577865
Inventors:
Hans W. Faust - Heidenheim, DE
Karl Felle - Oberkochen, DE
Dierk Hobbie - Konigsloroun, DE
Heinz Krastel - Oberkochen, DE
Richard J. Kaiser - Huntsville AL
Robert L. Kuelthau - Huntsville AL
Alward J. Pinard - Westford MA
Gary D. Wylie - Harvest AL
Assignee:
Intergraph Corporation - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H04N 104
US Classification:
358488
Abstract:
An apparatus for capture of image data from an object has a detector array containing at least one detector row, and arrangements for rotating the detector array relative to the object, as well as for moving the object and the detector array relative to one another in a desired direction of scan. A control arrangement causes the detector array to be rotated to a desired orientation with respect to the object based on information in the object and causes the object to be scanned by the detector array in such a way that the detector row is at right angles to the direction of scan. A similar method is also provided.

System For Plotting And Scanning Graphic Images

US Patent:
4992890, Feb 12, 1991
Filed:
Mar 17, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/325212
Inventors:
Alward I. Pinard - Westford MA
Gary Girzon - Somerville MA
Andrew Warner - Harvard MA
Assignee:
Intergraph Corporation - Huntsville AL
International Classification:
H04N 104
US Classification:
358474
Abstract:
A system for scanning or plotting a graphic image. The system deflects (10) a portion of the beam of light (18) by an amount dependent upon the value of a characteristic of a signal (12). A plurality of signals is generated (12), each having a different value of the characteristic. Portions of the beam are deflected along paths (15), such that the pixels created by one portion are disposed along one scan line, while pixels of the other portion are disposed along a successive scan line.
