Filed:
Feb 18, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/368895
Inventors:
Paul A. Bauerle - Fenton MI
Allen B. Rayl - Waterford MI
Donovan L. Dibble - Utica MI
Kerfegar K. Katrak - Fenton MI
Kevin J. Storch - Brighton MI
Assignee:
General Motors Corporation - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F02D 900
US Classification:
123396, 123399, 123198 F, 123481
Abstract:
An engine control system and method monitors torque increase during cylinder deactivation for a displacement on demand engine. A timer is started at cylinder deactivation. A controller adjusts throttle position and determines whether cylinder deactivation completes within a predetermined time. The controller adjusts throttle position based on the status of an enable condition. The controller determines if engine speed and vehicle acceleration are each within a threshold. The controller operates the throttle in a preload operating mode if the enable condition is met and operates the throttle in a normal operating mode if the enable condition is not met.

US Patent:
8381700, Feb 26, 2013
Filed:
Dec 3, 2009
Appl. No.:
12/629959
Inventors:
Vijay Ramappan - Novi MI, US
Allen B. Rayl - Waterford MI, US
International Classification:
F02M 25/07, F02B 17/00, F02B 47/08
US Classification:
123295, 12356821
Abstract:
An engine control system for a homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) engine includes a position determination module, a position correction module, and a valve control module. The position determination module determines an initial position of an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve based on a predetermined function of a desired EGR flow, intake manifold pressure, exhaust manifold pressure, and exhaust gas temperature. The position correction module determines a position correction for the EGR valve based on pressure in a cylinder of the HCCI engine. The valve control module commands the EGR valve to the initial position during a transition from spark ignition (SI) combustion to HCCI combustion, and commands the EGR valve to a final position within a predetermined period after the transition, wherein the final position includes a sum of the initial position and the position correction.

Filed:
Mar 13, 2013
Appl. No.:

Inventors:
Allen B. Rayl - Waterford MI, US
Assignee:
GM GLOBAL TECHNOLOGY OPERATIONS LLC - Detroit MI
International Classification:
F02D 41/00
US Classification:
123350
Abstract:
A cylinder control module: selects one of N predetermined cylinder activation/deactivation patterns as a desired cylinder activation/deactivation pattern for cylinders of an engine, wherein N is an integer greater than two; and activates and deactivates opening of intake and exhaust valves of first and second ones of the cylinders that are to be activated based on the desired cylinder activation/deactivation pattern, respectively. A fuel control module provides fuel to the first ones of the cylinders and disables fueling to the second ones of the cylinders. The cylinder control module further: determines M possible ones of the N cylinder activation/deactivation patterns, wherein M is an integer greater than or equal to one; selectively compares the M possible cylinder activation/deactivation patterns with the desired cylinder activation/deactivation pattern; and selectively updates the desired cylinder activation/deactivation pattern to one of the M possible cylinder activation/deactivation patterns.

Valvetrain Control Systems For Internal Combustion Engines With Time And Event Based Control

US Patent:
7610897, Nov 3, 2009
Filed:
Apr 4, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/062938
Inventors:
Allen B. Rayl - Waterford MI, US
International Classification:
F02D 13/04, F01L 1/34
US Classification:
123321, 123345, 123 9015
Abstract:
A valve control system includes a vehicle control module that generates a lift mode command signal to transition one of intake and exhaust valves between N open lift modes. A time module generates a response time signal that indicates a duration of the transition and a lift limit signal that disables the transition. The time module generates the response time and lift limit signals based on current lift mode and status signals. The current lift mode signal indicates a current lift state of one of the intake and exhaust valves. The status signal indicates status of a lift control valve. The lift control valve actuates one of the intake valve and the exhaust valve. The event module generates the current lift mode and status signals based on the lift command signal, the response time signal, and the lift limit signal. One of the time and event modules enables the transition.
