Method And Apparatus To Isolate A Wellbore During Pump Workover

US Patent:
7219743, May 22, 2007
Filed:
Sep 1, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/931606
Inventors:
Sebastiaan J. Wolters - Kingwood TX, US
Raymond D. Chavers - Humble TX, US
John Cobb - Humble TX, US
Alfredo Gomez - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 43/12
US Classification:
166377, 166378, 1663324, 166 667, 166105
Abstract:
A system and method for actuating a shut-off valve in a wellbore wherein the shut-off valve element can be positively closed before the pump is removed from the well. A hydraulic actuator component is operably associated with the shut-off valve to provide for selective isolation of the well by positive closing of the valve prior to removal of the pump and opening of the valve after replacement of a pump within the wellbore. The hydraulic actuator component has a balanced hydraulic design wherein the valve closure element may be moved toward an open or closed position by flow of hydraulic fluid through first and second hydraulic lines. When a repaired pump or replacement pump is placed into the well, the actuator is stabbed into a packer element to seat it. The hydraulic actuator assembly is then operated to open the shut-off valve, thereby reestablishing well operation.

Multi-Cycle Isolation Valve And Mechanical Barrier

US Patent:
8006772, Aug 30, 2011
Filed:
Apr 10, 2008
Appl. No.:
12/100936
Inventors:
Samir Nazir - Houston TX, US
Alfredo Gomez - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 34/14
US Classification:
166386, 1663324, 1663328
Abstract:
A method for performing a wellbore-related activity may include positioning a sealing device along the wellbore; conveying a work string into the wellbore; using the work string to perform the activity; extracting the work string out of the wellbore; and shifting the sealing device to a closed position to seal a bore of the wellbore using a portion of the work string. A device that selectively seals or occludes a wellbore tubular may include a sealing device having a first and a second sealing element that seal a bore of the wellbore tubular. The first and second sealing elements may support a pressure applied in different directions. Pulling an engagement sleeve with the work string in an uphole direction may fold the first and second sealing elements into the closed position. The bore may be unsealed by applying a pressure cycle to shift the sealing device.

Overpull Shifting Tool

US Patent:
5549161, Aug 27, 1996
Filed:
Mar 6, 1995
Appl. No.:
8/400334
Inventors:
Alfredo Gomez - Houston TX
William M. Richards - Houston TX
Douglas J. Murray - Humble TX
Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 3412, E21B 3414, E21B 2300
US Classification:
1662551
Abstract:
A shifting tool is disclosed which allows movement of a shifting sleeve, to be followed by an additional force applied to ensure complete stroking of the shifting sleeve. This is accomplished by a shifting key to normally shift the shifting sleeve, followed by an overpull key which engages while the shifting key is still engaged. Once a predetermined force has been applied to the overpull key, the force applied from the surface is removed so that the tool may disengage from the sleeve. Subsequent manipulation, without necessarily any removal from the wellbore, if it does not result in a reengagement, provides feedback that the shifting sleeve has, in fact, shifted its full stroke. An emergency release is available which actuated by an overpull force beyond a predetermined level, applied while the overpull key is engaged for an emergency release from the shifting sleeve.

Metal-To-Metal Non-Elastomeric Seal Stack

US Patent:
7445047, Nov 4, 2008
Filed:
Oct 24, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/256888
Inventors:
Alfredo Gomez - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 34/14
US Classification:
1663344, 1663324, 277342
Abstract:
An improved seal assembly for use in sliding sleeve valves. The seal assembly incorporates a number of annular, chevron-shaped seal elements that are in a stacked configuration and preferably formed of a thermoplastic material to provide a fluid seal between the outer housing and the inner sleeve member of the sliding sleeve valve. In addition, the seal assembly preferably includes a pair of annular metallic seal members that have a C-ring cross-section (a “C-seal”). On opposite axial sides of each metallic C-seal are a C-seal support ring and an end adapter that are shaped and sized to assist the metallic C-seals to be axially compressed and uncompressed to resiliently seal against both the inner sleeve member and the outer housing.

Interventionless Reservoir Control Systems

US Patent:
7228914, Jun 12, 2007
Filed:
Feb 20, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/783404
Inventors:
Raymond D. Chavers - Humble TX, US
Graeme J. Walker - Kingwood TX, US
John M. Cobb - Humble TX, US
Alfredo Gomez - Houston TX, US
Assignee:
Baker Hughes Incorporated - Houston TX
International Classification:
E21B 33/12
US Classification:
166386, 1663321
Abstract:
Systems and methods for positively closing off a section of wellbore and, thereby providing reservoir control. Systems and methods are described for selectively closing off a section of a wellbore to fluid communication. The wellbore completion section may then be reopened to fluid communication upon reconnection of the upper completion section to the lower completion section. Advantageously, the systems and methods of the present invention generally preclude fluid communication between the annulus of the upper completion section and the flowbore of the lower completion section until the lower completion section is closed off to fluid flow.

Selective Running Tool With Separation Feature

US Patent:
2004023, Dec 2, 2004
Filed:
May 30, 2003
Appl. No.:
10/448893
Inventors:
David Rothers - The Woodlands TX, US
John Cobb - Humble TX, US
Alfredo Gomez - Houston TX, US
Samir Nazir - Houston TX, US
Elias Pena - Houston TX, US
James Youngblood - La Marque TX, US
Brian Roth - Houston TX, US
International Classification:
E21B023/00
US Classification:
166/382000, 166/381000, 166/125000, 166/115000
Abstract:
A running tool that delivers an object selectively to one of a plurality of landing nipples and then releases from the object is disclosed. The tool is actuated by raising it after it has passed the desired landing nipple to release a locating dog. The locating dog places locking dogs on the object even with a groove on the landing nipple. Movement of the tool downhole secures the locking relationship and releases the running tool from the object. A sheer pin allows testing at the surface that the object is locked in place, prior to removal of the running tool. The object comprises a fishing neck to allow it to be subsequently retrieved.
