Base-Cup For Assuring Vertical Alignment Of Semi-Hemispherically Bottomed Bottles

US Patent:
4241839, Dec 30, 1980
Filed:
Aug 14, 1979
Appl. No.:
6/066450
Inventors:
Alfred C. Alberghini - Dunwoody GA
Assignee:
Sewell Plastics, Inc. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
B65D 2300
US Classification:
215100R
Abstract:
A base-cup for supporting a bottle in an upright position is disclosed for use with a bottle having a semi-hemispherical bottom and having a radial indentation in the lower portion of its otherwise generally cylindrical body. The base-cup includes a sole plate and a cylindrical side wall having an open top edge with an annular bead on the inside thereof, and a bottom edge smoothly merging into the sole plate. The base-cup also includes limit means projecting upward from the sole plate into the interior of the base-cup for preventing the over-insertion of the bottle into the base-cup. Preferred embodiments of the limit means are illustrated which include circumferentially equally spaced and radially extending fillet webs joining the side wall to the sole plate, and upwardly projecting rings situated approximately midway between the center of the sole plate and the point at which the side wall smoothly merges into the sole plate.

Wide Stance Footed Bottle

US Patent:
5024340, Jun 18, 1991
Filed:
Oct 4, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/592778
Inventors:
Alfred C. Alberghini - Dunwoody GA
David A. Brunson - Marietta GA
Stephen R. Lynn - Douglasville GA
Assignee:
Sewell Plastics, Inc. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
B65D 102, B65D 142, B65D 2300
US Classification:
215 1C
Abstract:
A blow-molded bottle of thermoplastic resin has a hollow body with a generally cylindrical side wall rotationally symmetric about a longitudinal axis of the bottle and an integral base merging with the side wall. The base is defined by an outer surface having a plurality of arcuately extending downward projections separated from each other by hemispherical segments extending from the cylindrical side wall to the longitudinal axis of the bottle. Each of the arcuately extending downward projections has a first inclined portion contiguous to the longitudinal axis, a second inclined portion situated radially outside of, and axially displaced downwardly from, the first inclined portion, a generally perpendicular ring segment having an upper edge united with the first inclined portion by a curved portion having a radius of between about 0. 015 in. and 0. 060 in. , and a lower edge united with the second inclined portion. A radially outwardly and upwardly curved portion defining the axially lower most extent of each downward projection has an inner edge united with the second inclined portion.

Method Of Applying Coating

US Patent:
4525377, Jun 25, 1985
Filed:
Jan 17, 1983
Appl. No.:
6/458347
Inventors:
Gerhard E. B. Nickel - Kennesaw GA
Alfred C. Alberghini - Dunwoody GA
Assignee:
Sewell Plastics, Inc. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
B05D 118
US Classification:
427 12
Abstract:
A method for applying a PVDC polymer coating to the outside of a PET parison includes deionizing the surface of the parison, dipping the parison into an aqueous PVDC dispersion, withdrawing the parison at a controlled rate to prevent slubbing of the polymer coating, and drying the coating by exposure to desiccated air. The method dramatically reduces the energy requirements for coating operations yet produces a finished biaxially oriented PET container having superior gas barrier characteristics.

Hot Fill Container With Enhanced Label Support

US Patent:
5054632, Oct 8, 1991
Filed:
Jul 23, 1990
Appl. No.:
7/556535
Inventors:
Alfred C. Alberghini - Dunwoody GA
David A. Brunson - Marietta GA
Stephen R. Lynn - Douglasville GA
Assignee:
Sewell Plastics, Inc. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
B65D 102, B65D 142, B65D 2308
US Classification:
215 1C
Abstract:
A container made of thermoplastic material such as PET includes a bottom portion, a neck portion, and an intermediate body portion including at least two circumferential rows of panels for providing controlled volumetric reduction of the container. A land separates each adjacent pair of panels in each row. The rows of panels are staggered with respect to each other such that the lands of one row are vertically aligned with the panels of any adjacent row. The design distributes circumferentially the vertical and horizontal support for any label applied to the label panel of the container while still providing the desired panel movement in response to the existence of a partial vacuum within the container due to hot filling.

Bottle With Non-Everting Hand Grip

US Patent:
4804097, Feb 14, 1989
Filed:
Aug 19, 1987
Appl. No.:
7/087042
Inventors:
Alfred C. Alberghini - Dunwoody GA
Stephen R. Lynn - Douglasville GA
Assignee:
Sewell Plastics, Inc. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
B65D 102, B65D 2300, B65D 2310
US Classification:
215100A
Abstract:
A thin-walled plastic bottle has hand-grip indentations each of which are formed by a pair of vertical surfaces unitarily joined together along a common edge and inclined with respect to each other at an obtuse angle, generally greater than about 145. degree. A plurality of horizontal reinforcing ribs protrude outward over major portions of the first and second surfaces including the common edge, the reinforcing ribs inhibiting the everting of the hand-grip indentations.

Pasteurizable Container Closure

US Patent:
4813557, Mar 21, 1989
Filed:
Jul 19, 1985
Appl. No.:
6/757125
Inventors:
Gene A. Herron - Smyrna GA
Gerhard E. B. Nickel - Kennesaw GA
Alfred C. Alberghini - Dunwoody GA
Assignee:
Sewell Plastics Inc. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
B21D 3900
US Classification:
215329
Abstract:
A closure for bottles is disclosed which includes an internal radius support disk or cylinder for positioning within the bottle mouth to enable the bottle to resist radial inward deformation when subjected to pasteurization or other post-bottling heat treatment. The closure can be formed by coining a conventional aluminum roll-on cap blank using a pressure block having a central land projectable into the mouth of the bottle to form the support disk or cylinder from the top of the cap blank.

Non-Destructive Dissolved Gas Volume Testing Method

US Patent:
4327574, May 4, 1982
Filed:
Jul 22, 1980
Appl. No.:
6/171041
Inventors:
Alfred C. Alberghini - Dunwoody GA
Dennis C. Donalson - Marietta GA
Assignee:
Sewell Plastics, Inc. - Atlanta GA
International Classification:
G01N 700
US Classification:
73 19
Abstract:
A method for measuring the amount of a gas, such as carbon dioxide, dissolved in a liquid in a sealed thin-walled container without piercing the container or breaking the seal of the container. This is accomplished by deforming the thin-walled container by exerting a known force thereon, measuring the resulting deflection of the container, and measuring the ambient temperature of the liquid. By reference to a pre-calibrated chart, one can then find the amount of gas dissolved in the liquid at the known temperature and calculated pressure.

Abstract:
A blow-molded and tempered PET container specially adapted for hot filling includes a plurality of panels situated in circumferentially spaced locations around the periphery of the container, the panels bulging outwardly with respect to the body portion immediately contiguous thereto. The panels are mechanically reconfigurable to an inwardly collapsed position with respect to the immediately contiguous body portion for providing controlled volumetric reduction of the container to compensate for the development of a partial vacuum within the container.
