Bone Marrow Biopsy Needle

US Patent:
5634473, Jun 3, 1997
Filed:
Jul 8, 1996
Appl. No.:
8/669526
Inventors:
Alec Goldenberg - New York NY
Melvin R. Hoagland - Acton MA
Assignee:
Medsol Corporation - New York NY
International Classification:
A01B 1000
US Classification:
128754
Abstract:
An improved biopsy needle having an outer cannula, an inner tube, and a stylet. The distal end of the inner tube is provided with a snare in the form of a coil extending from the inner tube. The free end of the coil is adhered to the inner surface of the outer cannula. Upon rotation of the inner tube with respect to the outer cannula, the coil will decrease in diameter to either sever or hold the biopsy piece within the outer needle. After removal of the needle from the patient, rotating the inner tube in the opposite direction will cause the coil to expand to its original diameter and allow the biopsy piece to be removed from the needle.

Controlled Additive/Reactant Delivery System

US Patent:
7700046, Apr 20, 2010
Filed:
Sep 14, 2004
Appl. No.:
10/940339
Inventors:
Alec S. Goldenberg - New York NY, US
International Classification:
B01L 3/02
US Classification:
422100, 422 99, 422102, 4352873, 4352881, 604198
Abstract:
A system for controlled delivery of a predetermined volume of an additive (e. g. , a liquid, solid, etc. ) to a vacuum sealed container is provided and includes a delivery device that includes a housing having a chamber defined therein for holding the predetermined volume of additive and a piston or the like that is axially moveable within the chamber. The system includes a connector that is detachably connected to or formed as integral part of the delivery device. The connector has a hollow piercing element for piercing through a stopper of the vacuum sealed container. The attached apparatus and connector are mated with the vacuum sealed tube for delivering the additive such that the piercing element pierces through the stopper and one end of the element is in fluid communication with an interior of the container causing the chamber in the apparatus to be exposed to the vacuum resulting in the predetermined volume of additive being drawn from chamber through the connector and into the container without releasing a vacuum seal that exists between the stopper and container.

Aspiration Needle With Venting Feature

US Patent:
7207950, Apr 24, 2007
Filed:
Dec 14, 2004
Appl. No.:
11/013207
Inventors:
Alec S. Goldenberg - New York NY, US
International Classification:
A61B 10/00, A61B 5/00, A61M 3/00
US Classification:
600562, 600564, 600573, 604 45
Abstract:
An aspirating needle for collecting a specimen including an elongated hollow body that includes a first lumen portion and a second lumen portion. The first lumen portion is open at both ends for placement at a specimen site to collect and permit aspiration of the specimen from the specimen site. The second lumen has first and second vent ports, with the second vent port being formed along the elongated body such that that when the needle is placed at the specimen site, the second vent port is positioned at the specimen site. The first vent port is in fluid communication with atmospheric air when the needle is positioned at the specimen site so as to permit pressure within the specimen site to equilibrate with atmospheric pressure by means of the venting action of the second lumen. In yet another feature, the needle of the present invention includes a handle that permits the appropriate mechanical usage of the needle during a normal operative procedure, with the handle portion of the needle capable of having functionality incorporated therein. The needle can also include a locking mechanism for selectively locking and restricting axial movement of the stylet relative to the first lumen.

Connector For A Replaceable Biopsy Needle

US Patent:
5843001, Dec 1, 1998
Filed:
Sep 17, 1997
Appl. No.:
8/932109
Inventors:
Alec Goldenberg - New York NY
International Classification:
A61B 510
US Classification:
600567
Abstract:
A connector assembly is disclosed for connecting the proximal end of a medical device to a handle without compromising the sterility of the working (distal) end of the medical device. The connector assembly comprises a body that is rigidly attached to the proximal end of the medical device. A lever is attached to body and is resiliently biased towards a first position which engages the handle. A lock-tab projects from the lever in a direction generally away from the body and is shaped to be received in a lock-slot within the handle. The lock-tab and handle preferably are shaped to permit a snap-lock engagement of the handle and the body upon insertion of the body within the handle. This assembly can be used on a variety of medical devices and with a variety of handles. One industrial application is a biopsy needle having the connector assembly attached at its proximal end for a secure, snap-lock engagement to the handle.

Snare Coil Retrieval Device For Capturing And Retrieving A Specimen

US Patent:
7621923, Nov 24, 2009
Filed:
Feb 23, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/678478
Inventors:
Alec S. Goldenberg - New York NY, US
International Classification:
A61B 17/22
US Classification:
606127, 604267, 606159
Abstract:
A retrieval device for retrieving and capturing a foreign body specimen, such as a tissue specimen or a foreign material specimen, according to one exemplary embodiment includes an outer cannula member having an inner lumen and an inner member received within the inner lumen such that the inner member can rotate relative to the outer cannula. The inner member has a distal end that extends beyond a distal end of the outer cannula. The device also includes a first snare coil having a first end and an opposing second end. The first end of the snare coil is attached to an outer surface of the outer cannula and the second end of the snare coil is attached to the inner member to allow the snare coil to be actuated by rotating the inner member relative to the outer cannula so as to either open or close the snare coil for collecting the specimen.
