Fulcrum Type Can Opener

US Patent:
3954030, May 4, 1976
Filed:
Aug 26, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/607881
Inventors:
Albert E. Newton - Beverly MA
Assignee:
USM Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
B67B 700
US Classification:
81 346R
Abstract:
A hand-held, one-piece tool of single stamping design is adapted to be fulcrumed on the chime or rim of a container having an end closure, especially a closure defined by a weakening line. Relative upward pivotal operating movement of a handle portion about a first fulcrum portion acting on an outside wall of the container concentrates initial opening by a cam end portion of the tool bearing on the closure adjacent to its weakening line, and further movement of the handle shifts its fulcrum to a second fulcrum portion of the tool acting on the closure rim whereby the cam end portion bears progressively on the closure and away from its rim to rupture the weakening line and easily deflect the closure relatively inwardly of the container.

Hot Melt Dispenser And Method Of Making Its Melt Body

US Patent:
4014464, Mar 29, 1977
Filed:
Dec 9, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/639074
Inventors:
Albert Eugene Newton - Beverly MA
Richard Montgomery Elliott - Beverly MA
Assignee:
USM Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
B67D 562
US Classification:
222146HE
Abstract:
In a dispenser or applicator of heat softenable material, a melt body has a generally conical melting chamber extending between an inlet and a relatively smaller outlet passage, at least one by-pass interconnected to the melting chamber by a plurality of spaced, radial bores arranged to conduct hot melt from successive outer "layers" of the material as it is being progressively softened, reduced and liquefied in the chamber for flowing to the outlet, and at least one axial auxiliary channel extending between the outlet and the smaller end of the melting chamber for conducting the central core of the last-to-be melted end portion of the material. Preferably the body has a pair of by-passes, a pair of auxiliary channels, encloses a heater, and is of configuration facilitating its economical construction in one piece. The method aspect features casting or otherwise providing a one-piece melt body of a metal, such as an aluminum alloy, to provide a main conical melt chamber and a cavity for a heater, boring one or more by-passes in the casting from its outlet and toward its inlet end and substantially parallel and adjacent to at least a portion of the outer wall of the melt chamber, boring an axial auxiliary channel to interconnect the outlet to the smaller end of the melt chamber, drilling the casting radially to provide substantially aligned holes interconnecting a by-pass with the melt chamber, inserting an element for instance a plug or ball as by press-fitting in an outer end of each hole, and sealing the outer ends of said holes, preferably simultaneously, by swedging external metal of the casting in overlapping retentive relation to the exterior portions of the elements.

Closure And Method For Easy Opening Of Cans

US Patent:
4141464, Feb 27, 1979
Filed:
May 23, 1978
Appl. No.:
5/908734
Inventors:
John S. Kelley - Wenham MA
Albert E. Newton - Beverly MA
Assignee:
USM Corporation - Farmington CT
International Classification:
B65D 4132
US Classification:
220267
Abstract:
A can having a closure defined at least in part by a rupturable weakening line is provided with a finger-movable tab-like tool for safely opening the closure. The tool is a sheet metal lever pivotally attached to a can end in which the closure is deflectible and preferably non-severable. A depressor portion of the lever is raised from its prone or inoperative position and, in part, twisted about 90. degree. to locate its pressure-directing beak adjacent to a point along the weakening line, whereupon downward finger pressure on the depressor portion disrupts the line and deflects the closure inwardly. The lever is so shaped that depression of the twistable portion is limited by engagement therewith of an edge of the opening thus barring finger entry into the can opening as a safety measure. The lever may be provided at its opposite end with a handle whereby, when the closure has been opened as explained, the lever may be swung to clear the depressed end portion substantially from the can opening.

Methods Of Stiffening A Shoe Component

US Patent:
3973284, Aug 10, 1976
Filed:
Mar 18, 1975
Appl. No.:
5/559584
Inventors:
Albert E. Newton - Beverly MA
Roger L. Farnum - Peabody MA
Nicholas J. Gelsomini - Ipswich MA
Assignee:
USM Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
A43D 0000
US Classification:
12146D
Abstract:
The method of stiffening a selected area of a shoe component of flexible sheet material in which a layer of molten synthetic polymeric material is coated on the area to be stiffened, rigid, preferably heat-softenable, granules are applied to the coating layer while the coating material is soft to cause the granules to adhere, and the shoe component is pressed against a second flexible shoe component with the coating and granules between the parts and with the coating in heat softened condition to force the coating material through openings between the granules and into wetting engagement with the second shoe component. The assembled shoe components may then be shaped and the polymeric material cooled to form a layer of hardened polymeric material with the granules locked in it as reinforcing stiffening bodies.

Hot Melt Dispenser Body

US Patent:
4050890, Sep 27, 1977
Filed:
Apr 12, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/676220
Inventors:
Richard Montgomery Elliott - Beverly MA
Albert Eugene Newton - Beverly MA
Assignee:
USM Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
F27B 500, F27B 1700
US Classification:
432210
Abstract:
A hot melt body for an applicator or dispenser of thermoplastic adhesive first received in solid form, either as a progressively fed rod or in another mode, is provided having especial advantage in a light-weight hand-type device. The main melt chamber and its auxiliary channels as well as their interconnecting passageways are of configuration and spacing to effect maximum efficiency in transfering melting heat from a heating means to the adhesive being liquefied. To this end, also, complemental portions of the body include passageways designed to provide minimum, substantially uniform resistance to advance of the solid adhesive along the length of the melt body.

Apparatus For Feeding Glue To A Hot Melt Glue Dispensing Appliance

US Patent:
4032046, Jun 28, 1977
Filed:
Nov 1, 1976
Appl. No.:
5/737565
Inventors:
Richard Montgomery Elliott - Beverly MA
Albert Eugene Newton - Beverly MA
John Sherburne Kelley - Wenham MA
Assignee:
USM Corporation - Boston MA
International Classification:
B67D 562
US Classification:
222146HE
Abstract:
In a hot melt glue dispensing gun, apparatus is constructed to feed a flexible rod of glue to a heated melt chamber. This apparatus includes two motor driven gears which engage the glue rod and feed the glue to the melt chamber. This feed mechanism is mounted on a sliding frame which is spring biased to retract when the appliance is idling, thereby partially withdrawing the glue rod from the melt chamber.
