Abstract:
A liquid or ointment formulation for the treatment of a skin condition associated with leukocyte accumulation in the skin includes a therapeutic compound selected to reduce leukocyte accumulation in the skin and an aqueous solution of an organic solvent. The organic solvent increases skin permeability. A method of treating a skin condition associated with leukocyte accumulation in the skin includes the steps of applying topically a liquid formulation of a photosensitizer to a skin lesion of a patient afflicted with the skin condition and exposing the skin lesion to a light source.

Abstract:
The present invention provides method for treating a patient with cutaneous T cell lymphoma (CTCL). Generally, the methods include administering to the patient an IRM compound in an amount effective to ameliorate at least one symptom or clinical sign of CTCL. In some embodiments, the methods also include administering to the patient a priming dose of a Type I interferon. In another aspect, the invention provides methods of increasing a cell-mediated immune response of a cell population that includes cells affected by cutaneous T cell lymphoma. Generally, the methods include contacting the cell population with an IRM compound in an amount effective to increase at least one cell-mediated immune activity of the cell population. In some embodiments, the methods include contacting the cell population with a priming dose of a Type I interferon.

The invention provides methods of using photoactivated hypericin compounds which, when photoactivated using visible or UV-A light, are useful for treating numerous diseases and disorders in mammals. The compounds of the invention are useful for inhibiting the proliferation and accumulation of mammalian leukocytes and for inducing apoptosis in mammalian leukocytes.
