Biochemical And Genetic Analysis For Prediction Of Breast Cancer Risk

Biochemical And Genetic Analysis For Prediction Of Breast Cancer Risk

US Patent:
2009006, Mar 12, 2009
Filed:
Sep 12, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/854321
Inventors:
Fritz F. Parl - Nashville TN, US
Philip S. Crooke - Nashville TN, US
Marylyn D. Ritchie - Brentwood TN, US
David L. Hachey - Brentwood TN, US
Sheila Dawling - Nolensville TN, US
Nady Roodi - Nashville TN, US
International Classification:
C12Q 1/68
US Classification:
435 6
Abstract:
The present invention provides new methods for the assessment of cancer risk in the general population. These methods utilize particular alleles of three selected genes, here associated with specific biochemical activities, to identify individuals with increased or decreased risk of breast cancer. Using such methods, it is possible to reallocate healthcare costs in cancer screening to patient subpopulations at increased cancer risk and to identify candidates for cancer prophylactic treatment.

Method Of Detecting An Increased Susceptibility To Breast Cancer

Method Of Detecting An Increased Susceptibility To Breast Cancer

US Patent:
2008007, Mar 27, 2008
Filed:
May 18, 2007
Appl. No.:
11/750609
Inventors:
Fritz Parl - Nashville TN, US
International Classification:
C12Q 1/68
US Classification:
435006000
Abstract:
The present invention provides methods for identifying a subject having an increased risk of developing an estrogen-related cancer, comprising determining which alleles of the genes encoding CYP1B1, CYP1A1, COMT, and GSTM1 are present in the genome of the subject so as to determine an estrogen metabolizing enzyme genotype for the subject, and correlating the estrogen metabolizing enzyme genotype of the subject to an increased risk of developing an estrogen-related cancer, for example, breast cancer. Also provided by the invention are diagnostic kits to determine the presence in a subject of the alleles of the genes encoding CYP1B1, CYP1A1, COMT, and GSTM1.

Method Of Detecting An Increased Susceptibility To Breast Cancer

Method Of Detecting An Increased Susceptibility To Breast Cancer

US Patent:
2005025, Nov 17, 2005
Filed:
Feb 7, 2005
Appl. No.:
11/052544
Inventors:
Fritz Parl - Nashville TN, US
International Classification:
C12Q001/68
US Classification:
435006000
Abstract:
The present invention provides methods for identifying a subject having an increased risk of developing cancer, for example, breast cancer, comprising determining the presence of the homozygous wild-type genotype of GSTM1, wherein the presence of the homozygous wild-type genotype of GSTM1 identifies a subject with increased risk of cancer. The present invention also provides methods for identifying a subject having a reduced risk of cancer, for example, breast cancer, comprising determining the presence of the homozygous null allele genotype of GSTM1, wherein the presence of the homozygous null allele genotype of GSTM1 identifies a subject with decreased risk of cancer. Also provided are isolated nucleotide sequences and kits for identifying the GSTM1 genotype in a subject.

Method And Apparatus For Sampling Liquid Phase Components From A Liquid-Semisolid Fluid

Method And Apparatus For Sampling Liquid Phase Components From A Liquid-Semisolid Fluid

US Patent:
4577514, Mar 25, 1986
Filed:
Apr 9, 1984
Appl. No.:
6/598074
Inventors:
Charles A. Bradley - Brentwood TN
Herman Benge - Nashville TN
Fritz F. Parl - Nashville TN
William R. Seebaugh - Nashville TN
Assignee:
Vanderbilt University - Nashville TN
International Classification:
G01N 118, G01N 3348
US Classification:
7386301
Abstract:
To sample liquid phase components of a biological fluid which has been subjected to centrifugation to separate its liquid and semisolid phase components and define a liquid-semisolid interface therebetween, a probe carrying a sensor at its end is extended into and through the liquid phase components until the sensor detects the interface, whereupon further extension of the probe into the fluid is halted. A sample of liquid phase components is then withdrawn through openings in the probe spaced from the interface, so that only liquid components are sampled. It is contemplated that a stopper close a vessel containing the biological fluid, and that the probe be extended through and movable within a needle which first pierces the stopper, so that the probe may be moved through the needle and into the vessel. It is also contemplated that the withdrawn liquid phase components be aseptically transferred to a receiving vessel, and that the probe be cleansed with a flushing solution between sampling operations.

Apparatus For Continuously Sampling Plasma

Apparatus For Continuously Sampling Plasma

US Patent:
4976270, Dec 11, 1990
Filed:
Mar 28, 1989
Appl. No.:
7/329801
Inventors:
Fritz F. Parl - Nashville TN
Charles A. Bradley - Lubbock TX
Herman Benge - Brentwood TN
David L. Black - Hendersonville TN
Assignee:
Vanderbilt University - Nashville TN
International Classification:
A61B 500
US Classification:
128760
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for continuously sampling plasma are disclosed. The method of the present invention comprises removing blood from the patient, separating a substantially small portion of plasma, and returning the blood to the patient. The removing, separating, and returning steps are performed continuously and simultaneously with each other. The apparatus of the present invention relates to a double-lumen cannula or venipuncture needle for the removal and returning of blood to the patient at the same site.
